A good forwarder does more than book space. These questions help you compare providers on service, clarity and fit rather than price alone.

A freight forwarder arranges the movement of goods on your behalf, often coordinating carriers, customs formalities, warehousing and insurance. Because they sit in the middle of so many steps, the quality of the relationship has a direct effect on how smoothly shipments run. Choosing on the lowest quote alone can lead to surprises later.

Clarify what you need

Before requesting quotes, define the basics: the type of cargo, usual volumes, origin and destination, preferred transport mode, and whether you need customs clearance or delivery as part of the service. Giving every provider the same information makes quotes comparable.

Questions worth asking

About service

  • Which routes, cargo types and modes do you handle regularly?
  • Who will be my day-to-day contact, and how are issues escalated?
  • How and how often will I receive shipment updates?
  • Do you handle customs clearance directly or through partners?

About costs

  • Which charges are included and which may be added later?
  • How are storage, demurrage or similar charges handled if delays occur?
  • What are the payment terms and what documents do you issue?

About risk

  • What insurance options are available, and what do they cover?
  • How are claims for loss or damage handled?
  • What licences or memberships do you hold, and can I verify them with the issuer?

Test before you commit

If possible, begin with a smaller shipment and observe how the provider communicates, documents the work and resolves problems. Ask for references from customers with similar needs, and check any credentials directly with the issuing body.
